Madeira Levadas are an open canal system that was developed in the early 16th century, with the purpose of channeling water from the north side of the island to the south side.
Madeira being a volcanic island, has a very steep terrain, which provides both easy and relaxing walks through beautiful landscapes, but also provides more challenging walks over peaks, mountains, tunnels and waterfalls.
Madeira Levadas are generally accessible throughout the year due to our good weather.
What to take with you: footwear with good grip, layered clothing, waterproofs, hat, sun protection, flashlight, drinking water and some picnic food.
